There is nothing more exciting or frightening than deciding to do what you love for a living. Unfortunately, the odds for your succeeding in your labor of love are doubtful.

 

We have all heard the startup horror stories.  How many people who dreamed of their labor of love providing a living for them ended up in staggering debt and failure within five years? More than half of all business startups fail in the first five years according to SBA statistics. 

 

Unless you know something the failures did not know you will end up in the same dustbin.  Then you too can look forward to writing a book on “why failure is good for you.”

 

In the next few weeks we will explore why failure is so frequent and what you might do to avoid the same fate.

As your world turns in its desperate search for escape, Pizzaonia brings the promise of continuity and community through pizza, the ultimate comfort food.

 

Pizza to Pizzaonians is the mother’s milk of life.  Our mozzarella miracle pizza brings a feeling of comfort and well being that drugs cannot duplicate.

 

Why? When you first see our pizza as it leaves the oven it is the beginning of a religious experience.  Our dough with its slightly sweet aroma and sensually exciting crunchy texture is what you first notice.  It is unlike any crust you experienced before. Our crust is topped with tomatoes and basil- the freshest you have ever tasted.

 

And our mozzarella, produced from cows that live a pure organic life and they have a life, has the rare combination of texture, sweetness and tanginess that can only come from our free and peaceful Pizzaonian environment.

 

Our recipe is so simple, but in its simplistic purity a pizza was born that changed cultures and brought peace and community where none existed before.  And now we are being accused of “ pizza imperialism” simply because our pizzas have brought a sense of well being where none existed before.*

 

Well then, so be it.  As Pizzaonians we stand behind our concept of a better world through pizza. We found in pizza the way to end war and the need for government. We will never give up.

In a surprisingly angry announcement the American Pizza Alliance vowed to resist Pizza imperialism as practiced by Pizzaonia.  Mr. Patriati, spokesperson for the alliance, was outspoken in his opposition to what he called “the blatant takeover of America’s values by the insidious infiltration of irresistible pizzas.”

 

Mr. Patriati went on to say “even though Pizzaonia is a beta world reality, the fact that they have portalized illegally* into our country disguised as cooks, makes this invasion all the more sinister.”

 

“Furthermore, Pizzaonia is breaking the well established precedent of practicing traditional imperialism.  We all know the way it has always been done is by sending armies, diplomats and large amounts of foreign aid. To think you can do this by flooding a country with irriistable mozzarella pizzas is unthinkable.  Thank God their pizzas will not portalize or we could have been too late.”

SUBJECT:  Message to President Obama from Brother Giovanni

 

Dear President Obama,

 

I am sure it will seem presumptuous for a religious leader from the beta-world to attempt to give advice to the leader of your free world, however my spiritual responsibilities demand that I do.

 

We are able to watch events in your world through our Pizzaonian News Service and their portalized digital feed.  While I have my hands full trying to lead my world, I watched with fascination your rise to the Presidency. It was clear to me from the beginning that you are a true visionary.

 

It is very exciting to see in a president, the intellectual leadership that can grasp the future and its pressing demand for action that you so obviously possess.  However, as so often is the case in our beta-world, our greatest strength is also our greatest weakness.

 

As in my world, health care, banking and monetary reorganization, energy reform, restructuring and preparing your nation for the world that is emerging are all urgent priorities.  However, as vital as these priorities are, they are not the priorities.

 

Jobs and economic stability are the only issues now.  Courageously, you dealt with the crisis of economic stability decisively and no matter the critics, the people understood it had to be done.  Unfortunately, after such bold and decisive action, the waters became very murky.

 

In all due respect Mr. President, your country is still in the emergency room and is beginning to hemorrhage badly. Forgive me for stating the obvious, but the only action that will stabilize the patient at this point is jobs.

 

And when we say jobs, we mean jobs of today, not the jobs that clearly will emerge from the new industries of tomorrow, but today’s jobs today.  

 

What the patient needs now to survive are workers with picks and shovels, hammers and saws, workers who drive bulldozers, workers who build bridges and repair highways, workers who run the machines that still exist in your factories, and all the workers needed for the ancillary jobs that spin off from these activities.

 

Granted your speeches are eloquent, but your people need to see you by their side, in the offices, at the worksites, in the union halls, working for them and struggling with them.  When that happens, your gifted leadership will take care of everything else.

 

Our prayers and best wishes are with you, Mr. President, your world needs for you to succeed.  But may I humbly remind you, that sometimes we have to postpone the future in order to save the present.

How important is your life, to you and to those around you?

 
How important is your life, to you and to those around you?  Whenever I encounter a person who proclaims they would never change a thing and that their life has been one wondrous event after another, I am certain I am talking to a fool.

 

A critically intelligent person who takes their life seriously develops the sensitivity to bring a semblance of objectivity to the question of self and non self worth.

 

The time comes to everyone when what you are, and what you have been is no longer enough.  Emotionally this is major seismic event.  You are confronting the question of how important is your life.  For some your existence is critical.  Without you, they would not be.

 

Beyond that, what is your value to everyone else - the accidental relationships of your life?  Do you make a difference or are you simply passing time?  What is your value to yourself , and does it make a difference anyway?

 

In our day to day busyness with survival issues, the answers to these questions are seldom a priority.  However, they are there, if not directly, then as a vague uneasiness that is always playing in the background of our consciousnesses.

 

It is best to confront these questions early.  If you don’t you ignore them at your own peril. When you do you begin to lay the foundation that will keep your self esteem intact as you grow older.  When you set these questions aside, you delay the inevitable, and when the inevitable appears, you are not mentally prepared to deal with the emotional uncertainty that always follows. 

 

You deserve better.  The need is now. Confront and deal with the issues of self worth that need attention.

SUBJECT:  Pizzaonian Miracle Pizza fails portalization test.  More research needed.

 

Sister/Brother Veronica, Supreme Pizzaonian, today told disappointed Pizzaonians the exporting of the famous Pizzaonian Miracle Mozzarella Pizza Products to Worldonia would be delayed indefinitely.

 

In the first Mozzarella Pizza portalized to Worldonia the pizza was changed dramatically by the process.  Both the crust and mozzarella dried up and the delicious pizza was reduced to a clump of non recognizable stuff.

 

This is a major setback to both the monasteries and pizza conglomerate, Pizza digogo DiVinci.  The bakery expansion plus the additional revenues expected from the exports are considered essential parts of the foreign policy initiatives to extend Pizzaonian influence in Worldonian affairs.

 

S/B Veronica said, “While others may send armies to extend their imperial ambitions in Pizzaonia we accomplish the same thing by exporting our irresistible pizza products to foreign lands.  This has been our way from the beginning and our success rate is phenomenal. The only criticism we receive is that we make a lot of people overweight with our imperial ambitions.  We regret this but some ‘collateral damage is unavoidable.” The need to extend our influence and to bring our Pizzaonian culture to other worlds is essential to our national security in this ever expanding, over weight universe.”

 

This turn of events has caused heated dissension among Pizzaonian leaders and I am sure there will be a full debate on how failed pizza portalization affects Pizzaonia. More later as this story develops.

Brother Giovanni has portalized to Worldonia and is currently in the United States commenting on the American scene for PNS.  July16, 2010

 

 

If you are going to comment on what is happening in the United States today you have to be careful as to the style of writing you choose.

 

Events here have become bizarre enough to make you wonder if you are witnessing reality or some weird form of satire that has replaced real life experiences.  The line between satire and life has become so blurred it is hard to know which is which.

 

All of this would be funny if it weren’t funny.  Many people here get their information about world events by watching comedians comment on today’s news.  If this is true imagine the consequences in a democracy where some semblance of fact is necessary to make an informed decision.

 

What has caused this?  And why do people here feel the way they do about politicians and political events?  That will be for scholars of another generation to determine.  As for now we can only speculate.

 

Some time ago a funny thing happened on the way to the polling place.  Voters stopped taking their political leaders seriously.  To some extent they try to pay attention to their elections and keep up with what’s happening in the political arena, but for the most part they no longer believe what they see or here. While information is king, facts are no longer relevant.

 

What replaced their need for facts is a nebulous, intuitive feeling on how the events they are witnessing affects them.  If they are agitated enough they vote on this feeling, if not, they can wait for another day. Perhaps this is the way it always was and you might be right.  If so, what makes this time more alarming is the degree to which this phenomenon is now unfolding and shaping present and future events.  Information overload has taken its toll.

 

All of this is not lost on the opinion makers.  Today they are able to get information out to millions of people in minutes.  That information does not have to be accurate.  What it does have to be is good enough to create the negative or positive impression you are trying to place in the public’s mind about a candidate or an idea.

 

No longer do you see serious attempts to bring reform and positive change.  Now what you get is complete acceptance of the system as it is and ingenious methods that exploit the situation to further a self serving point of view.

 

This has become the true art form in the United Sates – how to manipulate and bombard public opinion by innuendo, half truths and lies all packaged to be made palatable to a mass audience.  This is endemic to the culture here and has become so pervasive, cynicism is considered normal. Will they change this? - only when it stops working.

 

As Edward Murrow said, “The speed of communications is wondrous to behold. It is also true that speed can multiply the distribution of information that we know to be untrue.”

In an announcement that stunned all of Pizzaonia, Sister/Brother Veronica was named Supreme Pizzaonian and will preside over all temporal and spiritual affairs in Pizzaonia. Her spectacular rise from kitchen helper to Supreme Pizzaonian is heralded as one of the greatest success stories in Pizzaonian history.

 

This announcement follows the equally unexpected resignation of Brother Giovanni as Supreme Pizzaonian so he could become the Worldonian Bureau Chief for the Pizzaonian News Services.

 

Sister/Brother Veronica is given credit for her inspired leadership during the pizza and health care crises that brought the monasteries to the verge of bankruptcy.  Because of her concept of “playing small pizza” instead of competing with the “big spenders” in the Pizza world, she was instrumental in negotiating the successful merger of the monasteries with pizza conglomerate, Pizza digogo DiVinci.

 

Sister/Brother Veronica was also instrumental in having the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for woman monks rescinded.  She remains a favorite of the Pizzaonian people and her elevation to SP which caught most by surprise is welcomed by all Pizzaonians.

 

Brother Franco, who was considered the favorite to replace Brother Giovanni, surprised everyone by choosing to remain head of all Pizzaonian Monasteries.
