"Storm clouds" by unknown Pizzaonian painter

“The world is full of abstract, virtual heroes and very few real time heroes." If that were not true, how could so much injustice continue to exist?
This question should trouble us all. No doubt most of us will rise to the occasion of protecting and caring for those we love regardless of the risk. And yes, most of us are generous and giving in a non-direct way.
We continue to send a few dollars to the right organizations, and that does help ease the conscience. And yes, we usually voice vocal support for the moral causes of our day - but direct involvement that is another story.
Perhaps it is supposed to be that way. Possibly some of us are meant to be directly involved and go where we are needed and do what must to be done. Their stories and heroism invariably get our attention, and we wonder how they do what they do. Are they really different than the rest of us? Yes, I suspect they are different.
I don’t want to minimize the sacrifice that goes into surviving and maintaining one’s dignity in these troubled times. I am sure there are many stories we all could tell about the heroism that quietly takes place every day within very ordinary circumstances.
However, at night when the world goes quieter for most of us, I do think of those heroes who commit their lives and their treasure, regardless of the risk, to helping people who would not find love and direct help without them.
Yes, they are different than we are, and whenever we can, in our involved abstract way, we should do what we can to support them. After all, this may be the role we were intended for after all. .
