Random musings on writing
Recently, I read an article on writing that said we should never be writing just for ourselves, especially if we expected anyone else to read what we wrote. At first glance, this seems reasonable. However, when you really think about it, some serious questions arise.
When we write for a specific audience how authentic can we be? If we are an expert on the subject, we can target who would be the most interested. However, does that mean we are writing for the audience or ourselves? I know this can sound like I am chasing my tail; however, I do believe there is some merit in taking a closer look at this subject.
I pursue this subject because I am a firm believer that regardless of the subject I have to write for myself first. This makes for authenticity. I know I have to think of my target audience. Certainly, I try to direct my writing to an area where there will be some appeal. Perhaps, that’s what people really mean when they say you “write for your audience.” If so we can all agree.
