The most difficult of all graces to cultivate is the grace of becoming a good listener. Being a good listener is more than just giving someone your ear.
Good listening requires focused concentration. It requires a willingness to hear and to respond with more attentive listening.
The arduous task for most of us is to shut up. Shutting up is more than not talking. Shutting up also requires stopping the endless chatter and thoughts that go on in your mind while pretending to listen.
Being attentive to a person that needs to be heard is to perform a great act of charity. When we listen to hear, we are affirming the person we have given our ear to. We are saying without speaking – I know you are here – I see you and I care. This is truly the work of the saints.
