"To be or not to be" - A Pizzaonian perspective on life and other stuff.

No matter how free we think we are, the world or its people will leave its imprint on you. We are the sum total of our experiences and they have left their psychological mark. Make no mistake about it; it is as true as the coming of death. If the person you need to be and the person you are is in conflict - the question is, what to do about it? First, recognize it. To face this reality with clear and determined purpose is the first step to freedom.

Confronting this demon will require facing some very uncomfortable truths about yourself that are very difficult to resolve. If you believe you are an independent person, it will be even more difficult when you discover that the yoke of this imprint is much stronger than you ever imagined. This realization will create some self doubt since you believed that you were free from issues that you thought long ago resolved.

The next realization is the stirring of strong emotional conflicts that reveal the depths of your denial about basic elemental truths about your true feelings – feelings that you thought had been dealt with in the past. As a mature person that has not had to deal with deep seated emotions on this level for a very long time, this can be a roller coaster ride unlike any you have been on before.

First the good news: To have this dilemma show itself in your life at this point probably means that you are at the beginning of a new re-birthing process that can bring positive change.

The bad news is for the good to happen, you are going to face some very difficult and trying moments that can bring you down into the depths of despair. However, if they are faced with determination and courage that self discovery requires, the difficult times will be overcome and you will find yourself at the beginning of a new and exciting creative period in your life.

What will your choice be? Life or death? Let’s not confuse this death with physical death; however, that might be easier to deal with. This death is the emotional death of yourself and your special gift that the world will never see because the courage to live it was never obtained. If you live a long life and denied your authentic self to exist, and you have time to reflect on this at the end, you will sense the tragic loss this is - not just for you, but for those whose lives would have been better because your gift was allowed to be.

And if this be the case, at the very end, when there is no time to do anything else but die, you will discover the true meaning of despair.*

This is no ordinary crossroad. - There comes a time in every person’s life when you are at the crossroad.

There comes a time in every person’s life when they are at the crossroad. This is no ordinary crossroad. The choice here will be life changing and in order to make the right choice the act must be faced with introspection and courage.

Courage is elusive and we talk and write about it all the time. What is it? For me it is the will to act and do what is necessary and face the consequences of your act regardless of the result. Sounds harsh and perhaps it is.

Real courage requires you to take a stand on what is fundamentally and morally necessary for you to survive. This means you face the possibility of major change or disruption in your life in order to survive authentically as the person you are and were meant to be.

We all know this is easy to say and so hard to do. Why? The answer is always the same. We do not have the courage to be what we are meant to be so we work hard to protect the status quo no matter how difficult or mysteriously devious we have to be. The pain of the disease is easier to bear than the pain of the cure.

And that takes us back to choice. How do we know which is the right choice when we stand at this crossroad. Again, the answer is simple. You already know. We always know what the right choice is. We simply must muster the courage to face it.

In each of us at the center of our being is a beacon that constantly guides us to do the right thing – to be who we are meant to be. The difficult task is to unravel the clutter blocking the signal. We have years of accumulated mental static and clutter we willfully have created to keep the truth from penetrating our consciousness..

This is not an easy task, nor will you necessarily find your answers here. But this is the beginning of a journey that hopefully we will travel together. I have concluded asking the right questions may be more important than looking for answers. The right questions usually begin the process that leads us to the answers we seek.

We will seek the courage to be who we are meant to be.

Artistic Success: There is no greatness or personal integrity without authenticity

For the artist, introspection is fundamental to their work. Without introspection and the authenticity you hope it creates; your work is merely a reflection of the world in which you live. This may be good enough for the outside world, but it will never bring into being the complete personal success that every artist seeks.

To seek your personal reality through introspection, and then act with the personal courage it requires to make it happen is the path to authenticity.

And there is no greatness or integrity without authenticity. We often confuse greatness with fame. That is not what we are considering here. The personal honesty we need to feel within ourselves is vital for the completion of our artistic journey. It may only be known to us. And in the end that will be enough.

The layperson always presumes that for the artist to be successful, you also need to make a living from your art. This is an overwhelming consideration of the mechanistic and material world in which we live. But what about the art that is created everyday independent of the world’s eyes and praise, does this make the work less authentic or worthy? How much great art exists today, not because it brought fame within the lifetime of the artist, but because the art survived antiquity and was eventually discovered.

Even so, every artist, known or unknown also knows there are times of doubt and insecurity that threaten your artistic perspective if not your very existence.

So what do you do about it? The one thing you can do, you keep going. However, before you start again, a moment of introspection helps here.

A legitimate question is “Do I just keep going?” The answer for me is always a resounding yes. Even if no one else ever sees what I am doing it is necessary for me to continue. It is what keeps me vital. It keeps me informed and moving forward in my life and in my thinking. It keeps my mind relevant and alive.

If creating your art allows this to be, all else falls into place, and you remain true to yourself.

So how do you materially survive? The way most artists have survived from the beginning of time. You find work that provides for your material and personal responsibilities that still allow you to create.

Sometimes the work is related to the area of art you practice – often it is not. However, regardless of the type of work that it is - it must allow you the time and resources to continue to produce your art.

Finally, always remember we must seek with all the courage of our being - authenticity. Our work can only be vital to ourselves and others if we are authentic. Our words and works must carry the power of truth. It can be ugly or beautiful, but it must be authentic – nothing else will do.

And let us never forget our art has significance simply because it is our work - our creation. That should be enough – and most of the time it is.

So we are left with the same task. Let it fly – let it all happen. Regardless of what transpires you will always know you had the courage to be honest with yourself.

In the end that may be the only thing that matters.

In search of quality relationships - some thoughts on the subject

In both our business and personal lives, we seek successful relationships. Much has been said and written on the subject. And yet, for many of us, successful relationships seem to elude us. The question is always, why?

At the heart of every human dilemma is the need to connect to other people. When we are in touch with each other, we find ourselves fulfilled, life seems worth living – experiencing and sharing with others completes us as human beings.

Many of us, other than the most cynical, would agree with this. Then, why is it difficult for us to find this kind of fulfillment? I suspect our problems all revolve around the concept of trust. To reach out to other people, you are going to have to trust them to accept you.

And many times, the people we reach out to seldom respond in the way we want them to act. We can be offended and hurt by their response.

Some things to think about the next time you reach out to another person, and they do not respond to you as you expected.

1. When you believe yourself to be an open-minded person, think about it – you are probably not as open-minded as you think. This is an area of great, personal self-delusion - the notion that we are open-minded and right is an insidious state of mind that can destroy most relationships.

2. We can be patronizing and condescending without realizing it. Make sure, when you're reaching out to someone it is not done with a sense of your superiority. This is easy to do. Be aware of this glaring fault most of us have from time to time.

3. Make sure you are reaching out for the right reasons. Often we reach out to satisfy a need we have rather than trying to help someone else with a need they have. Often we refuse to accept another person as the person they are; we expect them to be the person we need them to be. When we do this we are both narrow-minded and selfish.

Most of these problems are caused by a lack of trust in others. However, just maybe, the lack of trust we fear is in not trusting ourselves rather than the lack of trust we anticipate from others.

To have faith in yourself is to be a complete human being. This means we embrace our wisdom and practicality along with our foolishness and inconsistencies.

To see the absurdity in life and in ourselves is a gift from heaven - to be able to do this is to embrace yourself as fully human. By accepting our inconsistencies, we become compassionate and more open to those around us.

Then and only then do we become valuable to other people for we can accept them as the rich fabric of life they really are - not as we want them to be.
