Brother Giovanni's Journal
Several of our staff suggested the next place for me to go with this journal was to talk briefly about some of the better know Pizzaonians.
Learning more about the people that influence Pizzaonian affairs might help to better understand what an alternative universe is.
Since we all started out together here at the monastery, many of our leaders are close friends of mine. When they heard I would be writing about them, they had some trepidation that personal items about their lives would become general knowledge.
That may seem strange to Americans where the right to privacy no longer exists. Pizzaonians still consider the right to privacy a fundamental tenant of a democratic society – a quaint and old-fashioned idea in Worldonia. I assured them I would keep my remarks general and not specific. I know you will understand why it must be this way. Perhaps as we get to know each other better, we can become more personal.
It is important to know that the Pizzaonian Monasteries are not like anything in your world. We have men and woman monks of every religious persuasion as well as atheists who are an important part of our community.
We have no single, absolute authority here, but Pizzaonians tend to follow those leaders who earn their respect. The difference between your world and ours is our leaders have to maintain the respect of the people continuously, not just to the point when they are appointed or elected.
The most respected position we have in Pizzaonia is “Supreme Pizzaonian.” Sister Veronica now holds that position, and she is one of the best-known and respected leaders in our history.
Sister Veronica is a native-born Pizzaonian and began her career at the monastery as a kitchen worker in the bakery. She became a monk five years later. At that time, “don’t ask, don’t tell” was the policy for woman monks, so she used the name Brother Veronica.
One afternoon while working at the bakery, she discovered the image of the late Brother Timothy’s face in the mozzarella cheese topping of each pie that came out of the ovens. From that day forward, the pizzas became known as “The Miracle Mozzarella Pizzas.” After that, Sister Veronica's fame grew rapidly - and the rest is history.
Till next time ..........Brother Giovanni
