Musings from Pizzaonia
Nothing defies reality as much as the right-wing advocates of American politics screaming to cut back food stamps. Their argument is always the same lament: too many people who can work do not because food stamps make it possible to stay home and lead the good life.
And they soon follow with the cry that food stamps can now buy all the junk food and goodies that only the hard-working people of America deserve.
Obviously, history is not the forte of the American political right wing. Originally, food stamps were only to be used for staples: bread, milk vegetables and meat. However, the giant food corporations of the United States heavily invested in the production of fast foods (junk foods?) were not to be left out of this huge windfall of government money.
Their argument was one of fairness and equal access, accompanied with millions of dollars of lobby money to influence the U.S. Congress. Why should the poor be denied the same right of every American to abuse their bodies with junk food? And to know one’s surprise the Congress agreed.
An argument that appeals to universal fairness cannot lose in the United States. Thank God for such advocates of fairness as the American food industry and the U.S. Congress.
