Sometimes you have to wonder if you can separate your experience from your perception. Pizzaonius once said, “We do not see with our eyes but with the sum total of our experience.” He was quick to point out that you can’t separate the two. Well, if that is the case, where does that leave us? I am afraid in a very bad place. Most cultures are trapped in the time warp that defines their values.
The worst thing about this worst of all assumptions is that not only do we want what is good for us; we also believe it is good for everyone. We feel so strongly about this, we assume it is our moral duty to make sure everyone in the world shares our good fortune.
One way we show the courage of our convictions with this assumption is by using any means necessary to shove our belief system down the proverbial throat of anyone who does not share our view. This not only builds an empire, but also creates a sense of national superiority, which can take you a long way along the road to world domination.
Now we are realists. We know this cannot be done in one generation. As a result, we pass this heart-felt knowledge of our superiority to each new generation entrusting to them the mission of converting the world to our way of life. It is this kind of humility that only reinforces our faith in what we believe.
