A funny thing happened on the way to Utopia - A Pizzaonian perspective on the American political scene
Just when you believe an activity has reached its highest level of achievement, you are surprised one more time.
Demagoguery when will you cease to amaze? While we expect the United States to create new levels of excellence in all activities, who could have imagined the demagogues, who represent the modern branches of reactionary ism and radicalism in American politics, to have reached such levels of competence.
Their level of demagoguery achievement is so high it has reduced the conservatives and liberals to complete unimportance. Mainstream Democrats and Republicans have been made irrelevant, without fully grasping the significance of their insignificance.
While it is pathetic, it still stirs pity when you see and hear mainstream Republicans call for a return to so-called Republican Party principles. You might as well call for the return of oil lamps as a household fixture.
What amuses us is how the right-wing demagogues have captured the title “conservative.” Give the Democrats some credit. They recognized long ago that the radical left has made the term “liberal” a synonym for pariah. They now call themselves, somewhat sheepishly, “progressives.”
No such luck with our mainstream Republican friends – they just don’t get it. The term “conservative” has been relegated to the trash bin as a viable political term – at least for the time being. In the meanwhile we hear their voices through the night calling for the return of conservative principles.
You might as well have asked the original tea party colonists to jump into the water and retrieve the tea they threw overboard.
The question that baffles Pizzaonians is how did the demagogues achieve such influence and power?
We don’t have the answers but some things happened that helped this radical change to occur. For one journalist ceased being journalist and became entertainers. It is amusing how a network will occasionally run out a real "live journalist” to give themselves the appearance of credibility
However, for the most part, we have entertainers ready to give an all too willing public large doses of radical and reactionary claptrap that poses as news commentary.
Many a top forty disc jockey’s career has been reborn because of new found abilities to rant and rave political absurdities to an all too willing prejudiced audience. And since ratings trump accuracy, enter the clowns or as we say here in Pizzaonia, “the demagogues” ready to serve the “public’s interest” as the new pseudo journalist.
It begs the question who is the willing public?
This is not an easy question to answer. To begin with a major part of the American electorate has checked out. The Millennials, while stirring, are still an unknown.
What we have left is a much divided prejudiced audience looking for points of view to affirm their dogmatic and myopic perspective. They have not been left wanting. The radio and television stations remain all too willing to serve the public the “junk food news” it desires. (Or deserves?)
In the meanwhile the beat goes on – however, many still wonder what happened to the melody.
