So often a new generation sees an event as unique to them as if it never happened before without any reference to like past events historically. This seems to be part of the inanity of each age group and part of the never-ending process that allows each of us to become more narcissistic and self-serving.
Unfortunately, it is very hard to help ourselves. It is our very nature to see ourselves as superior to what came before, and also to believe we are better able to understand and deal with what comes, no matter what it is. This seems to be the folly of our time.
One thing we can correctly assume is that the time we live in is very dangerous, if for no other reason; we are capable of destroying ourselves and the rest of the world. This should be a sobering thought for all of us.
Knowing this, however, is of little value if we don’t have a modest awareness of history to begin with – then add to this technology that is moving at the speed of light - and we have a serious problem on our hands.
What can we do about? Maybe, very little. In modern times, events seem to have a life of their own. The real issue might be to avoid the event in the first place. It would be wonderful if we had leaders and citizens so informed that they could see the problems before they actually arise.
And the beat goes on and on and on……….
