It is getting harder to understand the transformation that is occurring in the United States. One thing we do know, the transformation is underway.
Unfortunately, many Americans do not seem aware of the tectonic shift of values and conventions happening in their culture – unfortunately, this should be clear to all – but is not.
Their old tried and true American value system is no longer in place and the new value system that will eventually replace it has yet to arrive. The result is a cultural limbo that is at the mercy of constant bombardment by non-essential and ubiquitous information posing as “breaking news.”
This “cultural limbo” creates a vacuum that sucks all creativity out of the air. However, if we count technical achievement as the highest rung on the ladder, the United States holds its own. Nevertheless, if we focus on the cultural and political values the technology gives birth to, we have a divisive, polarized society where each side concentrates on its dislike, even hatred, of those who oppose them.
This creates a very negative society where most of the time is spent disparaging your enemy rather than making good things happen. This is very disconcerting for those of us those watching from afar. We are used to seeing the United States focus on creating new and enlightened perspectives that includes the best from all points of view.
This would better serve the world since the world expects more from its greatest democracy. But, until then, we will see the continued rise of the extreme elements in the United States. This does not bode well in a rapidly changing world.
Welcome President Trump, "the great divider."
